Following the announcement of his appointment, but prior to his installation, Sir John Kerr wrote to Whitlam.
Kerr told the Prime Minister he was “looking forward with interest and excitement to the prospect of acting in the high office of Governor-General”.
The letter was written on March 12, 1974. It was published by the National Archives as “Find of the Month” in November 2005.
